More Memories!
The Vegan Nom's Vegan Chorizo & Black Bean and the Vegan Tempeh Bacon & Organic Tofu Scramble Breakfast Tacos
Austin, TX; next to the greatest kitschy thrift stores that we (my real-life friend and I) biked upon!
Overall Rating: A+ ; Due to my lack of funds at the time I could only get one taco & my friend got only one too but I'm thinking that was due to her self-control to overeating (which I fight furiously for). I will review both, however, because we are friends and we share because that's what you're supposed to do Susanne!
Parts & Points:
1.) Vegan Chorizo & Black Bean Taco
Corn Tortillas: I have never really been a fan of corn tortillas so I wasn't looking totally forward to that part but I....WAS.....WRONG! The perfect combination of soft and malleable and warm and flavorful. Another must-visit-when-in-Austin-again!
Black Bean Filling: SO GOOD! I love a place that's not afraid to spice their food with real spices that aren't simply black or white.
Vegan Chorizo: Know how I mentioned in previous reviews that I am a vegan...sort of? If you don't then you haven't read it and you're kind of an asshole right now but I will forgive you and allow you to continue reading this because we do support democracy here in this great America!
This "chorizo" is like none I'd had before and I can only imagine how delicious real chorizo must taste! It's really just so good you have to have it for yourself as soon as you get there!
*bonus* various hot sauces: If I remember correctly, and I believe I do, 3 different types of hot sauces accompanied our tacos. That's right....3! And each one was ridiculously phenomenal. It made no sense how these were so good and all different levels of hotness so BE SURE to ask if you have a sensitive mouth or are a grandparent.
2.) Tempeh Bacon & Organic Tofu Scramble
Corn Tortilla: Revert to above point.
Tempeh Bacon: Another great replicate! Tempeh bacon really is the greatest for taste and they did it with flare!
Organic Tofu Scramble: If I remember correctly (and I think I do) there are some peppers and onions in the scramble. Even without them it would have been fantastic. Seasoned perfectly and just the right texture!
*bonus* Kumbucha tea from the adjacent "corner store": Locally brewed & a great pairing with our breakfast tacos!
In Conclusion: My friend and I biked all the way to this place - and it was much further than we thought but it was all worth the hot ride. I don't think my head's ever felt such suffocation as that from a bike helmet though yes, yes it is important to be safe and wear one or a friend like mine will try and make you crash and get a head injury to prove a point.
Capital City Bakery *a cupcake truck*: "P.B. Bats" & "Cookies 'n' Scream" (we were there on Halloween!)
Austin, TX
Overall Rating: B ; "What!? A 'b'?" you may be saying. Look, as you will read the taste and frosting and everything was so awesome.....except the size! These were so tiny for the price! If it would hurt the business to make them bigger well then I would rather accept the smaller one but I'm a vegan who believes that an oversize vegan treat is just a bit better than a regular oversize treat and dammit I just want a bigger cupcake! Phew!
*FUN FACT* ATX's vegan dessert scene use chick-o-sticks the top a ton of delicious items like cupcakes and sundaes and they are a love from my childhood! Thank you ATX for remembering to keep the chick-o-stix fond memory alive!
Parts & Points
1.) "P.B. Bats"
Vegan Chocolate Cake: Like a lot of vegan cupcakes this one was so very moist! I don't mind a mess when I eat so the soft crumbs I had to mash to my fingertips so as to not deprive my taste-buds of any of the delicate natured cake.
Vegan Peanut Butter Frosting (with chick-o-sticks!): Sometimes places have a hard time with the cake to frosting ratio, but I can say these folks got it pretty well down pat! And chick-o-stix.....oh those wondrous chick-o-stix!
2.) "Cookies 'n' Scream"
Vegan Chocolate Cake: Refer above.
Vegan Cookies 'n' Scream frosting: Same ability to know to say "when" on the frosting and you really have a hard time going wrong with chocolate sandwhich crumbles!
In Conclusion: Another great recommendation from Miss Heather - how fantastic! What's better on a hot, Austin day when you've biked all around evolution, eating frugally to have enough money for a vegan cupcake?
Concious Cravings: Vegan BBQ Seitan & Vegan Chimichurri Seitan "burritos" (the truck next to Capital City Bakery) with a blueberry lemonade drink!
Austin, TX
Overall Rating: A : I really loved my vegan chimichurri burrito and I am not really sure of my friend's or my reaction to the bbq but the folks running the truck were so charming and fun!
Parts & Points
1.) Vegan BBQ Burrito
Vegan Tortilla: From what I can recall it was a great tortilla! I've never really had a bad tortilla (unless it's corn) so I would imagine a bad one would stick out in my mind pretty heartily!
Vegan BBQ Filling: It's the cloudy portion of my memory but upon reading the menu I am realizing it was amazing and we could not stop talking about it! Bbq seitan is what keeps my veganism strong (along with non-carnivorous morals).
2.) Vegan Chimichurri Burrito
Vegan Tortilla: Mine was oven-cooked so nice and crispy on the outside - which I love!
Vegan Insides: If I am remembering correctly, mine was stuffed with a vegan "chicken" mix of creamy green chimichurri sauce! It was the favorite of the two for sure!
*bonus* Their seasonal beverages are freshly made and delicious! We got the organic blueberry lemonade and oh my god! It was so fantastic! Hit the spot for some thirsty bikers!
In Conclusion: Vegan or not, go to Concious Cravings! We went to their truck and I don't know whether or not they have a stationary location but whatever you find out don't miss out on this great food opportunity!
Hey Cupcake! Truck:
Vegan Cupcake of the Day: Raspberry Swirl with Cream "Cheese" Frosting
Austin, TX
Overall Rating: B: This cupcake was just phenomenal but it was the only vegan cupcake they had! Come on guys! It's just too easy not to accommodate. Also the pricing - again, I thought things were supposed to be bigger in Texas?
Parts & Points:
Vegan Raspberry Swirl Cake: SO FUCKING AMAZING! I literally yelled that just now - the neighbor downstairs is stamping at the floor with the bottom of the broom like we're in New York City!
Vegan Cream "Cheese" Frosting: Atop the glorious raspberry cake was a creamy, luscious vegan frosting sprinkled with vegan white chocolate! Oh man.....I should make some cupcakes.
In Conclusion: My hands are getting dry and I need to get up so this will be my last entry today SO you really, really, REALLY should check out their vegan cake 'o' the day and make a decision for yourself. However, if you see the Raspberry Swirl with Cream "Cheese" Frosting - JUMP ON IT! Just like Sugar Hill Gang proposed to Tonto.
